As some of you may know, the UCI men's rugby team kicked of the start of
the 2010 Collegiate Division II league season with two strong victories
against Pepperdine. Both made for exciting matches!
Having lost to Pepperdine in a preseason match during the fall, the
starting 15 began the game with a dominant performance. Despite a few
penalties early on for their aggressive play, UCI maintained their shape
to earn a bonus point in the first half. It was a total team effort led by
acting Captain, Stuart West, who played a wise tactical game at flyhalf.
With the ball-hungry forward pack playing aggressively at the breakdown,
the backs made sure to finish off the opportunities created by their hard
work with nifty footwork and exciting running. A testament to Pepperdine's
fortitude, the Waves began to rally in the second half. However, their
efforts did not phase the Anteaters who recollected to rack up a few more
scores, putting UCI on top 40-11.
Following the first side's performance, UCI's seconds, filled with many
new and eager players, edged Pepperdine 7-5. A tight game throughout, Rick
Hooy booted an amazing conversion kick, spotted five meters from the
sideline, to split the uprights and ensure victory.
Looking ahead to a challenging away match at Arizona State University next
Saturday, the Anteaters plan to continue building upon this win through
more hard work this week and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates on how
your UCI Anteaters do through the 2010 season!

Titans Take Higgins Cup From Irvine
The U.C. Irvine Rugby Club hosted Orange County rivals, Cal State Fullerton, Friday
evening at the A RC Fields in their annual Higgins Cup match. The Anteaters held an
11-0 lead well into the second half, but yielded two converted tries to the Titans
to fall behind in the match. A few late 5-meter lineout attempts failed leaving the
Anteaters on the losing end of a 14-11 result. "It was a close match and we fell
just a bit short tonight which is disappointing, "said Irvine team captain, Ronan
Corkery. "We have one pre-season match left and will look to prepare for our league
some more before we break for the quarter." The Anteater B-side team won their first
match 20-5 against the Titan B-side. U.C. Irvine will play their final fall
pre-season match at Cal State Long Beach on Saturday, December 5th.

Anteaters Fall to Bruins
The U.C. Irvine Rugby Club dropped two matches to first division, UCLA, Friday
evening at the ARC. The Anteaters were outplayed by a more aggressive side by a
final score of 44-10 and just couldn't find any continuity or execution in their
game. "We simply, let this contest slip away from us tonight and were shown that
we've got plenty of work to do," said Irvine coach, Dan Cossettini. "We'll improve
across the board from this experience". The Anteaters will look to rebound this
Friday as they host Orange County rivals Cal State Fullerton at the ARC Fields for
the right to the Higgins Cup that has been held by Irvine since 2006. Kick-off is
scheduled for 6:30pm.
